GSK Breakfast Symposium Infectious Diseases Across the Lifespan
– The Hidden Burden Beyond the Acute Episode
Date: Tuesday 16 June 2026
Start time: Register and breakfast provided from 7.15am. Symposium begins at 7.30am
End time: 8:45am
Venue & location: Marvel stadium, Victory room (A), Level 1
Access directions: Gate 9 at Marvel Stadium is located on the Bourke Street side (Harbour side) of the stadium, best accessed via the Bourke Street pedestrian footbridge from Southern Cross Station.
For parking, use Car Park A or B on Bourke Street and follow signs to Gate 9.
Flyer link: GSK Satellite symposium at CDIC
Event blurb:
When we talk about adult infectious disease, older adults dominate the conversation.
But are we recognising the full burden?
Emerging evidence suggests that infectious diseases in adults aged 50-64 have far-reaching clinical, economic and health-system level impacts that extend well beyond the acute episode, yet this age group remains under recognised in current policy settings.
Join the discussion as we challenge the assumption that adult infectious disease burden begins at older age. Register to hear insights from an esteemed expert panel and participate in the thought-provoking interactive discussion.
Program highlights:
The symposium will include three insightful presentations discussing the latest evidence on the following topics and will be followed by an engaging panel discussion and interactive audience Q&A:
-
Infectious disease outcomes can extend well beyond the initial episode. Explore how infectious diseases can trigger inflammatory pathways with downstream, multi-system consequences, shifting the focus from short-term to longer-term outcomes that matter in everyday practice.
-
Drawing on Australian real-world data, examine how infectious diseases in adults in their 50s, especially those with comorbidities, are associated with disproportionately high hospital costs and resource use, reframing where prevention and policy attention may have the greatest system impact.
-
Discover how infectious disease epidemiology is changing, with growing data revealing increasing disease burden and unmet need in younger adult age groups, reshaping assumptions that infectious diseases is primarily and elderly issue and underscoring the importance of earlier, life-course based risk considerations.
Target audience: Infectious disease and public health physicians, General practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, Immunisation providers, Government representatives/Department of Health, Primary Health Care Networks
Registration cost: Free with breakfast provided (registration required)

CSL Seqirus Breakfast Symposium
Vaccine Effectiveness or Vaccine Coverage:
What Matters Most for Influenza Outcomes in Australia
Date: Tuesday 16 June 2026
Start time: 7:15am (7:00am registration/ breakfast available)
End time: 8:45am
Venue & location: Marvel Stadium, Foundry room (previously named Sports Bar), Level 2
Access directions: Gate 9 at Marvel Stadium is located on the Bourke Street side (Harbour side) of the stadium, best accessed via the Bourke Street pedestrian footbridge from Southern Cross Station.
For parking, use Car Park A or B on Bourke Street and follow signs to Gate 9
Invitation link: Please follow link for more information.
Event blurb: Influenza continues to pose a substantial burden on Australia’s health system, particularly among older adults. While vaccination remains the cornerstone of prevention, enduring and timely questions remain: is it vaccine effectiveness or vaccine coverage that most strongly determines real‑world influenza outcomes? And is it possible to achieve both?
This interactive satellite breakfast symposium will bring together leading Australian experts to explore this question from varying perspectives. Through focused presentations, delegates will gain insights into the population‑level impact of vaccine effectiveness and the critical role of achieving and sustaining high vaccination coverage—especially in the context of an ageing population, post-pandemic vaccine hesitancy and broader systemic trust.
Designed to provoke reflection and discussion, delegates will be invited to share their own experiences and viewpoints enabling a rich exchange between policy makers, program managers, clinicians and researchers. In the context of the successful adult influenza vaccination program attendees will be invited to consider what defines “standard of care” in influenza prevention—and what expectations we should hold for future innovations.
Join us for a dynamic, thought‑provoking discussion on shaping the next chapter and advancing the standard of care for influenza prevention in Australia.
Target audience: Stakeholders involved in influenza prevention and vaccination in Australia (e.g. Healthcare Professionals, Government and Public Health Officials, and Researchers).
