Flyer Link: TBA

Event blurb:  While adult infectious disease discussions often focus on the elderly, emerging evidence suggests that preventing infectious diseases in younger older adults (50–64 years) may result in substantial clinical, economic, and system level impacts that are under recognised in current policy settings. In particular, there is increasing recognition that infectious diseases may cause more severe and longer lasting consequences beyond the acute episode than previously appreciated, especially in individuals with underlying conditions.

Program Highlights:

The session will discuss the latest evidence on the following topics:

  • Highlight the clinical severity, downstream consequences, and long-term burden of infectious diseases in adults, using illustrative examples across different pathogens.

  • Strengthen recognition of the importance of intervening early in the disease pathway, before severe outcomes and downstream complications occur.

  • Demonstrate the economic impact of adult infectious diseases, including healthcare resource utilisation and hospitalisation costs, with examples drawn from RSV.

  • Improve understanding of the shifting epidemiology of infectious diseases, and the under recognised, growing unmet need in younger age cohorts.

Target audience: Infectious disease and public health physicians, General practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, Immunisation providers, Government representatives/Department of Health, Primary Health Care Networks

Registration cost:  Free with breakfast provided (registration required)

Event blurb: Australia’s universally funded influenza program for people aged 65 years and over is
widely regarded as a public health success. But in a rapidly changing environment, marked
by emerging vaccine technologies, economic pressures, evolving tender structures and
lingering impacts on public trust post COVID, how do we ensure that success is sustained?

This interactive breakfast symposium will bring together government policy and
procurement leaders, public health experts, clinicians and immunisation providers to
explore what has underpinned the effectiveness, resilience and efficiency of the current
65+ influenza program, and what factors must be carefully considered to support its
ongoing success.
Through a mix of short expert presentations and table discussions, participants will
examine the clinical, programmatic and system level factors that matter most for older
Australians, from simplicity and supply reliability to evidence, safety, cost effectiveness and
public confidence.
Designed to encourage open discussion and shared learning, this session aims to equip
decision makers with practical insights to support evidence informed, risk aware choices
for Australia’s most vulnerable population.

Target audience: Stakeholders involved in influenza prevention and vaccination in Australia (e.g. Healthcare Professionals, Government and Public Health Officials, and Researchers).
